Called my mom yesterday for Thanksgiving, went through the usually pleasantries, but then my mom asked, "you know what i was thinking about today?"
I knew immediately - Ed.
This was the first Thanksgiving since Ed passed away, and it has been a few years since I went to Ed and Casandra's place for Thanksgiving dinner. But my strongest Thaksgiving memories are from his house, coming home from college, and Casandra cooking like she has 100 people coming over. Collared greens with neckbone, and a giant cheesecake, which more than once Ed and I would split in half and have at it. The year i came home from college, and was at the peak of having mono (didnt know it at the time), and knew something was wrong because i couldnt eat anything. Melvin coming over and grabbing a plate. Ed's daughters, young at the time, asking for second helpings of that incredible mac and cheese
Im thankful for a lot of things. All those years at Ed's place for Thanksgiving? It will always be near the top of my list.
